I’ll be anchoring the 9:30 Club Backbar for RJD2’s upcoming stop in our nation’s capitol. Not only will RJ be prepping for the January 19th release of his new album, The Colossus, but he will also be hitting the road as Kenna’s tour DJ in the coming months. Found this pic when I was diggin’ through the good ‘ol iPhoto the other day. I Had the chance to DJ a house party with DJ Drew “Grandmaster Dee” of the legendary group Whodini. The trio was responsible for the classics “The Freaks Come Out At Night”, “Friends”, ”Five Minutes of Funk”, and “One Love”, as well as a slew of other pioneering electro-rap jams.
For some reason the one thing I always remember about that night was when Dee threw on “Gypsy Woman” by Crystal Waters (who was also in attendance) and how everyone there just completely lost their shit. I’ve always tried to replicate the moment by dropping the same track whenever possible (and appropriate), but I have to admit I’ve never been able to do it quite like the Grandmaster.

And I thought Crystal Pepsi was odd.
Just thought I’d take a stab at re-doing our flyer for Monday, since Chad and I weren’t too stoked on the bottle service-esque nature of the original. Wrote a song ‘bout it, like to hear it? Here it go…
MARIAH CAREY - TOUCH MY BODY (HIP HOP DAN’S CLEVER REMIX)
This is one I did quite some time ago, but remains one of my faves. It started off as a joke until I realized…I think I actually really like it. In fact, I like it far more than the original…it takes poppy saccharine r&b goo and turns it into a bonfire singalong. Definitely not for club use, but worth a listen in my opinion.
JASON DERULO - WHATCHA SAY (HIP HOP DAN’S JUST LIKE HEAVEN EDIT)
Today’s edit is Jason Derulo’s new single, Whatcha Say, which uses elements of Imogen Heap’s “Hide and Seek”, atop an edit of The Cure’s classic “Just Like Heaven.”

MAROON 5 - THIS LOVE (HIP HOP DAN’S UNFINISHED BUSINESS RIDDIM MIX)
This one’s pretty straightforward, but should also be useful for DJ’s — Maroon 5’s “This Love” atop the epic “Unfinished Business” riddim. You’ll recognize the riddim from Mavado’s “So Special”, as well as one of my favorite tracks of the last few years, “No Games” by Serani.

GORILLA ZOE - HOOD NIGGA (HIP HOP DAN’S SWEETEST TABOO EDIT)
Here’s a quick edit I did this morning of Gorilla Zoe’s “Hood N***a” blended with Sade’s “The Sweetest Taboo.” Thought it worked pretty well, nothing fancy…feel free to pass along if you like.
